Now if you’re forgetful and mess up your planning (like me) or just a student who procrastinates a lot sometimes (sometimes also me), I have another alternative, I use a site called (#NotAnAD), what it does is, you tell it when you want to wake up and it calculates in sleep cycles at what time you should go to bed so that you can wake up feeling fresh and not like a zombie…oops! I meant groggy. The strategic human capital literature indicates the importance of human capital to work unit performance. I started working around that and so I planned my day (recently learned a new technique and using successfully, will share soon) so that at 00h00 i’ll be asleep and at 5 a.m. How did I do it? on weekends, before I sleep i’d look at my watch and when I woke, i’d count how many hours it had been and surprisingly found that I can function optimally with 5 hours of sleep (😃Yay! seems like I did listen when they spoke about experiments in biology class). Too much biology talk? lets get back to the matter at hand, as I was saying, I knew something needed to change, and so I started valuing my sleep more, Schopenhauer said “ Sleep is the interest we pay on the loan of life” and I decided to pay it happily, I then experimented with different techniques first doing Polyphasic sleeping, sleeping for 4 hours and then getting the rest in through short naps during the day, I can’t say that it worked for me,so I started experimenting with exactly how much sleep my body needs.

Sleep is the interest we pay on the loan of life Now you may argue that you can still crush your goals even though you haven’t gotten enough sleep, true and that’s because your parietal lobe steps in but can’t do the same job as efficiently as the temporal lobe. They also looked at the temporal lobe (ooh science!) which is responsible for speech and long term memory and found that was in a relaxing state when you get little sleep or you’re sleep deprived, now in a well rested person it would’ve been lighting up (kind of confusing right?) and in case you haven’t noticed when you’re sleepy you tend to slur your words. Now you might say well if it lit up than that is good thing right?Well not really, because it means that the brain is working even harder to do the same tasks. semi-cold shower to awaken my senses (pretty sure that no health practitioner would advise doing such)īut somehow along the scheme of things I started to see that maybe this isn’t worth it, why would I put my body through so much “stress”? and knowing me, I am a super energetic person (only in the company of others, I don’t like having pity-parties, but I do have down days and encourage those, I am an ambivert people!) and so it was strenuous on my body to the point where i’d pass out some days (luckily, almost always in my room).Īfter this encounter I knew I needed to change something and the stats for sleeping less were just alarming - A study done Oxford University and The Royal society for public health found that when you’re sleep deprived it is equivalent to you being drunk 🍻, what happens is that your prefrontal cortex (PFC) lights up way more, in simpler terms - it is working overtime, now for those of us who never really listened in Biology class, your PFC is responsible for personality, decision-making, planning etc.

  • a back-up playlist/ Listening to Jim Rohn during my breaks.
  • Energy drink followed by coffee when they finished.
  • The reason people sleep less is to get more done or if you’re a varsity student like me, it is because you messed up and need to study and for a little while doing the cross-night sessions worked, I had a checklist Study Checklist Now I’ll admit it, that I was like that, I could go hours without sleep and just work the night away being productive (or so I thought), and it made me feel good about myself, I would look at my friends and family and think to myself, while you were sleeping “ I was out here getting it”, I could do 24 hour vigils, yes you read it right from 22h00 to 22h00 (and I partially because…coffee).

So often we hear those words being spewed from “ productivity freaks” and motivational speakers and often times when we’re the ones in the crowd who so aimlessly shout and scream along, “ yeah, Sleep is for losers” or “ I need to be awake not asleep, when I chase my dreams”.
